I erected these walls to protect myself:
Fully outgoing, curious, little self;
Too often taken advantage of, mistreated little self;
Abused, ignored, often abandoned little self
Who was once optimistic and loved people
Is now a jaded, misanthropic older self.
The walls serve dual function
Both protecting and preventing interaction
Like the walls of Paradise
Erected tall, yet not tall enough
To keep the ethereal beings out;
Ephemeral peace to whom is offered
When the walls keep in more
Than they can protect?
