When the feeling of being trapped overwhelms the soul
And despair seems like constant company,
I think of the freedom of the magnificent whales:
They are not trapped in the vast oceans,
So free they seem when they breach the surface,
So beautiful and awesome as they break out.
Though brief the freedom, it is significant:
Momentary escape is better, and an illusion of freedom
Is far better than lingering confinement
As the feeling of suffocating melts away
In the face of even momentary freedom.
